The way computers are build and sold these days, they are “little black boxes” that do the thing I want, when I press this button. And that makes it not so encouraging for a lot of new people. But as a switcher there is a lot of these things. I guess when you are into linux for years you don’t see these issues anymore as you developed the skills to solve these issues. But as a “noob” I have to google for like 2 hours to find out. I mean, my name is André - and I can type that with no issue on my Mac, but on my linux it always typs Andr´e. Not be a super admin terminal nerd (to throw a clichée in here). But while I have some fun tinkering with the terminal and finding out that “cp” means copy, most of the people want to USE their computer. Because the privacy issues get more into the consciousness of people. And I think that is one of the main complaints to get some “normal” people to switch. So using software is not that of a joy like it is on MacOs. On Linux I have to go back to OBS, there is nothing I can buy, that is more user friendly (ha! The “evil word” in some linux worlds - gladly not here!). Simple example: I used OBS (streaming software) also on my Mac, but I never liked the “Windows feel” of it, so I switched to “Ecamm Live” a deadsimple streaming solution, that just works - and is succient for 99% of things I want to do on a live stream. I am not picking on the DE per se, but on the software choice and future proofness of the software.Īlthough I am sure, if they were (more?) paid developers on Gnome, they would have solved the issue that there is no native CalDAV support in Gnome calendar, and as a new user you have to scroll reddits to find that you have to install another 3rd party app (evolution) to get it to work.Īnd 99% of consumers aren’t interested in, or comfortable with, figuring out how to deviate from the default by wiping their hard drives and installing some Linux distro (especially when most third-party hardware and software vendors cater to Windows and MacOS first, because they have 99% market share, so many consumer products won’t “just work” with Linux)Īnd I think this is a main issue / reason: If there was a real alternative software for linux, that would so similar things - and had no 3 months learning curve - and there was some easy way to find this software, I think more people would consider linux not only as a dual boot but also as their first choice.īut since it is hard to find alternatives - and then learning them, a lot of people stick with “what they know”. Why should people stop doing it, if it pays the bills and they can make a profit and a living from it? Of course also paid software gets abondoned - but not so often. But since they charge for their work they actually have a business - and that brings more reliability and future proof to it - in contrast to things that are offered for free. I mean look alone what a company like Rogue Amoeba does on the audio sector. And what the starting point of my “low key rant” was, is that there is not so much stable reliable software as on MacOs for example. ![]() ![]() For me I am a content creator and business owner. ![]() I am not a gamer, so I have no experience in the field of how got linux is as a gaming plattform. Although the 100 / 200 % resizing thing in Gnome still drives me bonkers. ![]() Hey Jason, I agree on the point that especially things like Gnome or even Cinnemon are awesome DE experiences. But that doesn’t necessary mean that the Linux desktop falls behind Windows and macOS - for those who want a powerful desktop and aren’t afraid to customize their OS, Linux is by far the superior choice.
